Whether you love making and using test tiles, or hate making and using test tiles, they can actually save you a lot of time and headache in your pottery making process.

How many hours, days, weeks have we all spent crafting wonderful pottery pieces, excitedly decorated, glazed and fired them, only to get some underwhelming or very unexpected results out of the kiln? (Me raising my hand over here.) It can be a frustrating and disappointing experience.

Glaze making and testing has been a focus of mine over the past few years, and one thing I’ve gotten really good at is making test tiles.

One Test Tile was inspired by conversations I was having with a potter who was trying to achieve a very specific outcome with slips and glazes on a dark clay body. After months of trial and error, he eventually got pretty close to his desired result, but not before experiencing the frustration and expense of the trial and error process. He (sort of) jokingly said he wished he could just buy some test tiles instead of having to make them himself, and it got me thinking about how many potters might actually use them if they had easy access to them, and voila… a year later, One Test Tile has finally arrived.
